Secretary-Treasurer Emerita, 1951-1953

Dr. Aviva Haia (Schonthal) Bertran, Ph.D., Sigma

 

Dr. Bertran was born in Poland in 1928 and became a naturalized US citizen in 1949. She completed a degree in French from Hunter College and was enrolled in a doctoral program in French at Columbia University where, in 1951, she also served as Pi Delta Phi Secretary-Treasure. Following her service to Pi Delta Phi, she completed her Ph.D. degree in 1957. Her dissertation was entitled The symbolist poetics in the Mercure de France, 1890-1905. She later published articles in the French Review: "'Mercure de France':The Birth of a Publishing House, Vol 33 No. 4 (Feb. 1960) 351-358, and "Henri Hertz's Search for Truth", Vol. 36 No. 6 (May, 1963) 595-605. In 1970 she is listed as a Visiting Associate Professor of French at Stern College for Women at Yeshiva University in New York. Dr. Bertran passed away in 1974 and is buried in Petach Tikvah, Israel.
